The Immovable Standard Jeremiah 31.31-34 There is, in France, a special vault that holds the standard for one meter and one kilogram. It was established in the 1800's as the meter and kilogram. In eternity, an immovable standard of right and wrong have always existed because it's in the nature of God. There are absolutes. Absolutes of right and wrong, moral and immoral. The standard was placed in Adam's heart at the beginning of mankind, but marred by disobedience.
When God chose Israel and spoke to Moses, He gave it to man in written form. Written by God's "finger," it was the earthly expression of the heavenly standard, the 10 Commandments. Exodus 20. What was God's motivation in giving us the Ten Commandments? Matthew 22.35-40. The motivation wasn't to chain us, to punish us or to torment us. It's the highest and best expression of love to God and love to the rest of mankind. Are we required to obey it? Aren't these just ideals that are impossible to attain? Romans 3.19+20. The whole world is obligated to keep the 10 Commandments. "Well, I didn't know" doesn't cut it because our conscience told us we were breaking them. So what do we do? Rom. 3.21-26 It's what He did. God Himself fulfilled the Law and paid for our disobedience. We are still obligated to obey God's Law! Verse 31. We can't be justified to God by it, by our record of obedience. If we have been forgiven and cleansed and saved, we, by our new nature and the fact that the Law is the absolute standard, from the heart now strive to obey it out of love. Romans 6.15-18. An old Christian writer from the 1600's put it this way: "He that does not walk in obedience is a stranger yet to Christ. He that rests in his obedience does not know Christ." You'll never be right with God by your resting on your record of obedience. You have every reason to question whether you are saved if you are in open disobedience to God by dissing His standard. God writes it on the heart of every real new covenant Christian. Questions: Are you in disobedience to God? To some degree we all are. Have you repented? Are you wanting to follow God in obedience? Or have you made friends with sin? No, it's not okay. If you belong to Him, you'll want to do what He wants you to do. |
