We realize that the good news of Jesus Christ is too significant for all our efforts to be locally focused. The belief that our church's ministry cannot be just for ourselves comes from the Great Commission: Go into all the world...! In light of this commission, our church's Missions Board is given a portion of the offerings received by the church to redistribute by supporting and promoting domestic and foreign missions work. Regularly we visit or are visited by missionaries we relate to. It is more than exciting to see how God can use a local church in Brockport, NY to touch lives all around the globe. He is faithful! It is our belief that every Christian should undertake a short term trip at least once in his or her life. There are many benefits:
Often we send our own people to the mission field, sponsoring many short term endeavors, most of which have involved teens and young adults. Adults and youth have taken trips that have involved construction projects, prayer walking, transportation of supplies, encouragement of believers through relationship building, preaching and teaching, and creative evangelism. One of our most well known involvements is with the Flower City Work Camp in Rochester, NY. Every spring during their week-long recess from school, our high schoolers join forces with other local youth to participate in work projects in the city. It is a fantastic, close to home mission experience for our teens and adult volunteers alike. The Lord has also given our local church a specific calling to provide long-term support to a number of fruitful and devoted missionaries giving their lives to further the good news of God's Kingdom: among them are Jeff and Wendy Steen, pastoring a local church in Valencia, Spain, making an impact not only in their city but also their nation; a couple, who shall remain nameless, but continue to have a significant influence planting churches in Asia. |
